A great event to evolve your skills and meet the wider stilting community as we work, train and relax together, sharing stilting stories by the pool in the heat of the day and enjoy the unique urban desert city of Arcosanti. Start the full moon weekend and shake off the cobwebs by spending three days learning Carpetbag Brigade’s unique acrobatic stilt vocabulary.  There will be exercises for falling gracefully, effortlessly and safely to the ground along with partner work for lifts. Participants will also learn a mix of acrobatics, butoh and contact improvisation through still point exercises, partner walks, inversions & oppositions and graceful ground movement all on stilts. With a mix of technique and improvisation participants will be given tools to evolve their own sequences. Challenge and classes will be provided for all levels of stilters, beginners, intermediate and advanced. Evolve you skills and meet the broader acro-stilt community. Train, work and relax together, sharing stilt stories by the pool and immerse yourself in the urban laboratory and desert landscape of Arcosanti in Northern Arizona.

Stiltasana is for performers, stilters, dancers, yogis, and those with a deep curiosity to explore the capacity of their body.

Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels (Pre-requisite: stilt walk unaided)

Arrival September 21 (6pm dinner, 7:30pm evening class begins), departure September 23 (class ends at 6pm) participants are welcomed to stay at Arcosanti Sunday evening.

Peg Stilts and Knee Pads

We recommend using 2 feet – 2.5 feet aluminum peg stilts for our Stiltasana work.

All participants must have their own knee pads (including those who are renting stilts). These MUST have a plastic outer protection as well as foam. Carpetbag Brigade recommends Triple Eight as a retailer.

Wooden stilt rental from Daddy Long Leg Stilts is available at an additional cost and must be arranged on registration. Aluminum stilts will also be available for purchase, contact daddylonglegstilts.com for details prior to the workshop to ensure they have a pair made and ready for you to take home. If renting stilts, you will need to also bring a pair of sneakers which we will drill onto the stilts. Gym sneakers with laces and a good sole are ideal stilt shoes. Those renting stilts will need to be fitted by Carpetbag Brigade in advance of the workshop (before 6pm on September 21).

Overnight Options at Arcosanti

CAMPING: Camping at Arcosanti requires you to bring your own tent, mattress and sleeping bag. Camping is outside in the Meditation Gardens overlooking the Agua Fria river gorge. It can be windy (bring pegs) and September can be cold at night (high of 95F and low of 40F). If you camp come prepared! All campers have access to a shower inside Arcosanti.

SHARED DORMITORY: Dormitories at Arcosanti are 6 to 9 person shared rooms. You will sleep with other participants and have your own single bed in a shared community space. Arcosanti provides a blanket and a pillow, but you must bring your own sheets and pillow case.  Arcosanti can rent sheets for an additional cost.

GUEST ROOMS: Private single and double rooms are available at varying costs.

Stiltasana Food at Arcosanti:

ARCOSANTI CAFÉ: Arcosanti Cafe provides three meals a day to their community. The Cafe is less than 5 minutes from our working and living spaces and provides vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Due to the nature of the work and wanting to take full advantage of the time we have together, this will be the only option available for food while at Stiltsana.

Traveling to Arcosanti:

Participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to get to Arcosanti (13555 South Cross L Rd, Mayer, AZ 86333, USA).

Arcosanti is located one and a half miles (2.5 km of unpaved road) northeast of Arcosanti Road (exit 263) on I-17, near Cordes Junction, 65 miles (100 km) North of Phoenix. If you are coming by bus or shuttle, Carpetbag Brigade will arrange to have you picked up at Cordes Junction.

From the airport there is a bus called the “Arizona Shuttle”  which stops at Cordes Junction (our exit off of Interstate 17, about two miles from Arcosanti).
